Today, Saturday, July 4, 2020, an animal keeper at Zurich Zoo was fatally injured by an Amur tiger. The tragic incident is being investigated.
Shortly before 1:20 p.m., the zoo's internal emergency unit received the news that a female keeper in the tiger exhibit had been attacked by an Amur tiger. A group of animal keepers then immediately went out to the exhibit. They succeeded in luring the Amur tigress Irina with calls from the keeper, out of the enclosure and into the stable.
The specialists from «Schutz & Rettung» went immediately into the tiger exhibit to take care of the injured keeper. Despite immediate resuscitation measures, unfortunately, for the 55-year-old woman every help came too late and she died on the spot.
How exactly it came to the tragic incident and why the animal keeper stayed in the exhibit at the same time as the tiger is now being clarified by the responsible public prosecutor's office, the Zurich city police, the Zurich Forensic Institute and the Institute for Forensic Medicine.
A care team has been set up for the visitors and zoom employees who witnessed the incident.
For reasons of piety, Zurich Zoo will be closed tomorrow Sunday, July 5, 2020.
