Three questions for Thomas
What is your motivation for the Antarctic Research project?
The main motivation for our project is the fact that very little is known about the biology and population status of New Zealand penguin species. Our work is filling these massive blanks in order to improve the protection particularly of crested penguins.
An unforgettable moment in your project?
There are too many memorable and special moments we've experienced in our work with the penguins to single one out. But one of the most gratifying moments was when we finally steppet onto the sub-antarctic Bounty and Antipodes Islands, after years of hard work required to obtain the research permits and to secure funding for this ambitious endeavour.
Your biggest wish for your project?
That it makes a difference for the protection of penguins in New Zealand, both by getting the public acquainted with these fascinating animals and hopefully swaying politics towards less exploitation and more protection.
«We want to get the public excited about penguins and motivate politicians to do more to protect these birds.»
