Breeding Programmes
Zoo Zurich participates in the ex situ programs of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria EAZA with various animal species.
The aim of the breeding programmes is to create self-sustaining zoo animal populations with the highest possible genetic variability. In the sense of reserve populations, they also provide animals for reintroduction if required.
Each studbook has a coordinator. This person keeps track of the population and coordinates between the European zoos.
Zoo Zurich coordinates the EEPs for the following species:
- Arabian Oryx
- Cuban pigeon
- Galapagos giant tortoise
- Hyacinth macaw
- Impala
- Red-tailed Amazon
