    Bone structure of the Amazon milk frog

    The Amazon milk frog (Trachycephalus resinifictrix) has unusual bones: they are turquoise blue. As part of a study entitled «Blue frog bones: a mechano-structural design not yet resolved», researchers from Empa, the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI and EPFL are investigating the nanostructure of the bones and how this affects their mechanical properties. The tree cave toad frog is exceptionally good at jumping.

    Zoo Zurich is supporting the project by providing the researchers with naturally deceased tree cave toad frogs.
